The Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to the Gas-to-Power initiative, a strategic program aimed at leveraging Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources to drive economic growth, energy security, and industrial development.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the initiative, launched in 2021, is designed to transition Nigeria into a gas-powered economy by 2030 through targeted policy reforms, infrastructure development, and investment incentives.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of five Mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), highlighted the significance of these projects in advancing Nigeria’s gas commercialisation efforts.
Kyari emphasised that the new LNG plants would play a crucial role in expanding domestic gas utilisation, reducing flaring, and increasing the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He noted that by ensuring efficient gas transportation over long distances, these facilities would provide cleaner, more affordable energy solutions for industries, businesses, and households.
“This is particularly vital for regions without access to gas pipeline infrastructure,” Kyari stated. “With the unwavering support of President Bola Tinubu, NNPCL remains committed to harnessing Nigeria’s gas resources to fuel industrialisation, enhance energy security, and foster economic prosperity.”
The NNPCL boss further stressed that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s flare-down policies, ensuring that associated gas is efficiently captured and utilised rather than wasted. By expanding mini-LNG production capacity, Nigeria is positioning itself as a major player in the global gas market while reducing environmental impact.
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for selecting Ajaokuta as the site for the Mini-LNG plants, describing the investment as a major milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of energy security and economic transformation.
“I commend President Bola Tinubu, NNPC Ltd, and its partners for recognising Ajaokuta and Kogi State as strategic locations for these gas projects,” Ododo said. “We firmly believe that these plants will unlock significant investment opportunities, generate employment, and drive industrialisation across the region.”
The Gas-to-Power initiative is central to Nigeria’s long-term strategy for diversifying its energy mix, promoting sustainable economic development, and positioning natural gas as the country’s transition fuel. With continued investment in gas processing, distribution infrastructure, and power generation, Nigeria is poised to strengthen its domestic energy market while enhancing global competitiveness.
